Great share! Quite a story of a mess attendant who was awarded a Navy Cross and had a ship named for him!

Pearl Harbour - Cook takes A.A Gun [HD]
Great scene, great soundtrack by Hans Zimmer! Disclaimer: No copyright intended, for the purposes of entertainment only.
Good Hollywood rendition of what he did to earn his award.

PO1 William "Chip" Nagel
Leonard Roy Harmon
During his service he became a Mess Attendant First Class and was serving aboard the USS San Francisco (CA-38) when on November 12, 1942 he was killed in action. During the course of the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal he was assigned to assist pharmacist's mate Lyndford Bondsteel in caring for the wounded. While doing so he deliberately interposed himself between Bondsteel and enemy gunfire in order to protect his shipmate. This action resulted in his death.

PO1 William "Chip" Nagel -Thank you for clarifying. Ok me being a land lubber :) I did not know the history on that story for that DE. Now us Army Folks know there are at least two African-American WW2 heroes who both eventually died in combat.

PO1 William "Chip" Nagel - I was not saying sailors don't die being brave. Look at the USS Forrestal fire or the USS Franklin fire or even the USS Lexington in the Coral Sea. Aside from the battle of the bravery of tin cans in Leyte Gulf against the larger Battleship and Cruiser force, I like the bravery of the light cruiser USS Houston in early 1942.
