The only way to find out what happened would be to ask the Sidewinder OC/T team. Now, as a fellow OC/T I can tell you that this type of incident occurs routinely. The OC/Ts will have SA on the situation and will contact up to Operations Group to let them and the CG know. OC's will check up on them to see if they have food and water. Now, the unit in the box submits 2 personnel accountability reports, am and pm. So, someone in the CoC did not have eyes on Soldiers and reported them as present anyway. There is the first issue. Next, is the issue of the crew. Why do they appear as if they are critically wounded? Now we see a vehicle maintenance issue (peeling back the onion here) and we see a crew that does not know how to operate a radio or a vehicle. This could be targeted back to the Army not conducting training in BDAR. That is a completely other thread. So, we have a maintenance issue, an operator issue, possibly a cross organization issue without proper hand off issue, and lastly an accountability issue. Rest assured that these young warriors still got 8 hours of sleep per day. If it were me, after the investigation of course, they would be volunteered back to NTC with a sister unit to complete the rotation. And of course all NCOs involved would be reprimanded well. Just thought of this since Big Army wants more NCO ranks. Where the heck was the CSM? I'd have fun with him as well. Lets pull up his whereabouts for the last 9 days and trace his movements. In 9 days the CSM did not go to the BSA to check on troops or all the broke Engineer equipment. That is suspect to me.

Our friends at Army WTF! Moments were also very helpful in the stir up of the Where are the MREs? Controversy. If they want to be news, they need to frigging act like it. If they want to be grab ass satire, fine. Don't blur the two.

There's a lot of inaccuracy in the story(ies), so it's hard to pick which part to be critical about. On the face of it, two days is too long. There's a safety and accountability issue at the core.

GySgt John Olson - Of course it was meant to be funny! I have dealt with high heat. High humidity. Heat and humidity. Yes the desert does kill more quickly. It barbecues a person in the day and freezes them at night.

GySgt John Olson - The Soldiers were not stranded in the open. They had shade, water, and food. If we wanted a real lesson, Operations Group should have had the Soldiers captured by OPFOR and put up on television with hoods over their heads. (see real life) and then the Brigade Commander and CSM could have been trained as well.
