Thanks for reminding us TSgt Joe C. that on April 19, 1919 which was the Saturday before Easter, tense and complicated negotiations begin at the Paris peace conference over Italy’s claims to territory in the former Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Italy had wanted the city of Trieste because it had one of the few harbors on the Adriatic Sea as a war prize. The whole Dalmatian coast would also have been a welcome addition. They did get Trieste but the Italians felt disgruntled due to the loss of so very many men in World War I and the little territory they gained. This feeling helped to propel the fist fascist regime on earth to be established under the Italian monarchy in 1922. Mussolini triumphed by the disillusionment of the Italian people and got them involved with the losing side in the Second World War.

Interesting how Italy has Alpine troops that probably were stationed in the area that they got from Austria-Hungary
