Nobody ever died from benzene poisoning from their AC. Benzene is toxic (it causes cancer, it's one of the Hazmats Sailors have to deal with) but you'd have to do this every day for years and years before it'd cause you any problems. Open your windows, sure, but don't waste a lot of emotional energy stressing about it.

Meh. That's an article from a European version of something like Mother Jones -- something that ought not be taken seriously by people who have their own critical thinking skills. When it's hot out and I have to drive somewhere, I will continue to start my AC right away with the windows up. I'm willing to bet that if there was a serious medical study done, the short-term stress of sitting in a hot car accumulated over time would prove to be worse than the effects of turning on the AC with windows up accumulated over time.

90% of the time, I have my windows cracked all morning and afternoon. When I get in and leave work for the day, I almost always have 2 or all 4 windows down until I reach the interstate 3 miles away, then I'll roll them up to use the A/C or heat, but not for the toxic reason. Now that's just more reason to keep doing what I already do.

Mostly because I live in a warm and fairly humid climate and from May to October, the inside can get ridiculously hot. That and I try to save a few bucks anywhere I can, which that helps slightly.
