The implementation of the "Affordable Care Act" caused me to be terminated after 20 years of service as a consultant to the Federal Government. My service-connected disabilities were affecting my abilities to drive, go up an down stairs and my program director let me know my performance was not the reason I was being terminated.
SPC Darin Taylor in general I concur with you.
1. I would like to see the Federal government out of the business of penalizing people with fines who can't afford insurance
2. I would like to see the restrictions on purchasing out-of-state health insurance. If we could purchase insurance from anywhere in the nation, that would drive down costs and eventually drive the most expensive to lower their costs or be driven out of business.
3. I would like to see the provisions for insuring children up to age 26 included.
4. Unfortunately the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is so encompassing that it will most-likely need to be repealed. Otherwise a line by line modification would need to be pursued with all linking legislation included.

Ken Kraetzer - remember (1) the Bell network and the baby Bells after the FCC broke them up. In those days the providers were few. once the monopoly was broken up a host of local and regional providers entered the field.
2) the big health insurance providers tend to be in every state as separate entities. If the borders become porous, those giants will need to streamline to remain competitive.

SP5 Christine Conley - The Federal government has tended to monopolize over the past couple decades. The Fed governs the major banks, the ACA federalized healthcare to a large degree and penalized those who could not afford it - especially in West Virginia where I have a fair amount of experience.
There needs to be a balance in regulatory guidance which fits better with the constitutional stipulated balance between the Federal Government and State Governments and the people.
Currently there are so many Federal regulations that attorneys are required before business creation, merger or expansion.
There has been no requirement to search and reconcile existing laws and regulations before new laws are implemented. I saw a miniature version of this when I worked with OSD on policy and regulatory implementation. Policy documents were implemented, discarded and combined without taking into consideration the seams and gaps that would be created or erased.

LTC Ford, are a disabled Veteran? Retired? Eligible for TRICARE? I am not sure how the ACA played a role in your termination. The ACA has a provision for exceptions to policy if you can not find an affordable plan. Plus, the Disability Act prohibits discrimination based upon disabilities; and you have Equal Employment Opportunity laws that prohibit discrimination based on age.

MSG Laura Washington - I know many people whose families lost coverage when the ACA was implemented and the primary earner was terminated. Generally terminations of older experienced folks who were replaced by younger people were worded so that ACA was never mentioned.
1. Was initially rated at 70% service-connected disability by the VA in 2008. The VA refused to compensate me until Congress intervened on my behalf in 2010 [Congressman Frank Wolf's office].
2. The not-for-profit company that I was a senior consultant went through a business evaluation, like most, in the summer of 2013 as the ACA was being rolled out. I had worked for them for 20 years as a consultant to Federal agencies. My program director sent me a note to contact him on June 17, 2013. He told me that my performance was not an issue. My disabilities made it increasingly difficult for me to drive, climb stairs, etc. which was problematic since I generally worked in the pentagon and other large government agencies.
3. I became eligible for TRICARE in October 2016. If Congress had rolled back the credit for mobilized service to reduce retirement age from January 2008 to September 2001, I would have been able to fully retire from the Army in March 2014.
4. My faith is in God, HE told me be still and see the salvation of the Lord three times during Monday June 17, 2013. At the time I had no idea why. However God has always been faithful to fulfil HIs specific word s to me in HIS timing - from raising my dead infant son in my arms on September 28, 1991 while I was arguing with HIM; to healing me at Walter Reed Army Medical Center on March 12, 2003 after losing 15 units of blood during mitral valve repair surgery, to healing my wife of Lyme disease after doctors had given upon her; to bringing my father-in-law home to HIM so we could take care of my mother-in-law and so many other things. To God be the glory in all things.

without the full risk pool of the entire populace, it becomes impossible. This is one reason (among many) why single payer is the route most first world countries have chosen. And when you consider total cash outlays for healthcare (personal, insurance, employers, taxes, etc) our system is one of the most expensive and has some of the worst outcomes.
