Will be following this to see if a few of the adamant instigators chime in. Thoughtful post SN Greg Wright with a source that is credible.

There was a TED talk on grit. Intelligence, race, etc do not determine if you succeed, grit does. Clearly this guy has grit!

Great story and I agree with your comments wholeheartedly. If people are driven they can transcend their environments. BY all means I shouldn't have been able to go to college myself. My parents were church workers and teachers with four kids. Going to college meant finding your own way. I joined the military, went to college, got my commission, got two masters degrees, retired and working again all on my own dime. While I was in college there was a time I was working three jobs just to each and have a roof over my head. When I graduated, I had student loans out the ying yang but I pad them off. I say all that not to toot my horn...far from it. I say that to say that anyone with drive and determination, regardless of race, can make something out of their life if they don't let race or life circumstances define their vision.
One last story...there is an Air Force Recruiter who is the most successful Air Force recruiter in years. When asked what his magic potion was he said it is simple he has two pictures on his desk. One of him with his single working mom and little brother in front of their single wide dirty run down trailer when he was in high school and another with his wife and two children in front of their new on base house with his cars and manicured lawn. He simple tells his story between the two and how we was driven to make something better for himself. Anyone can do that...they just have to want it and not let anything define them.
