I don't think it affects the story other than to drum up reactions from the public. Assaulting a blind person is a disgusting act regardless of his status as a veteran. All I see happening by mentioning his veteran status is helping to drum up support from the military community.

The fact he is disabled makes it worse. Veteran status doesn't come into play.

I think what makes the story worse is that you have someone perusing a career in politics that has anger issues and no self control.

Aren't both cure-able? Wouldn't that be covered by the VA?

The VA will not cover that AND we all know it. Course now, if you ask them to feed you dead mice and cockroaches from the kitchen, they may oblige you.
