Hydrologic Outlook
National Weather Service Nashville TN
302 PM CDT Wed Jun 21 2017
...Remnants of Tropical Storm Cindy will Bring Heavy Rainfall to
the Mid-State late this week...
Existing Conditions...
Middle Tennessee is in good shape regarding rainfall so far this
year. Annual rainfall totals at our climatological sites are all
running near or above normal since January 1. This means the
ground in Middle Tennessee is still capable of absorbing heavy
rainfall from a single event, without producing any localized
flood problems. However, since we are expecting several rounds of
locally heavy rainfall late this week, the possiblity for flash
flooding will increase by the time we get to Friday afternoon and
Friday night.
Streamflows...
Currently, all rivers and streams are flowing at normal levels due
to recent rains.
Outlook...
Rainfall from approaching Tropical Storm Cindy is expected to
begin affecting Middle Tennessee as early as this afternoon over
southern areas. The first round of showers and thunderstorms
tonight through Thursday night is expected to drop between one and
one and a half inches of rainfall over the Mid- State. These
rains should be spread out over a long enough period of time so as
not to produce much chance for flash flooding. However, heavier
rains are expected to arrive Friday afternoon into Friday night,
dropping another 1 to 3 inches of accumulation. It is this second
round of rainfall, Friday afternoon into Friday night, that will
be most capable of producing localized flash flooding in our area.
Another concern will be the runoff from the expected rains into
streams and rivers in Middle Tennessee. From late this week into
early next week, some spots could see water levels rise to at
least Action Stage.
Please monitor the Hazardous Weather Outlook as well as other
products issued by the National Weather Service in Nashville over
the next couple of days to remain aware of the latest forecast
flood potential.
