Not surprised to read this about Edison. He was pretty astute as a businessman and he knew that success required a free country. He helped fund and build manufacturing plants to provide needed chemicals for the US.
Companies can do what the government cannot. They are flexible and can change direction as needed; the government is very clumsy at this imho
