Top scoring Japanese aces were Flight Petty Officers (Enlisted). Two of the top scoring Brit aces were also Flight Sergeants. Germans had no Enlisted flight scheme, but they did have a promotion-to-officer scheme for worthy Enlisted aircrew.

I also forgot the USN's Flight Petty Officer scheme. I can't remember when it was done away with, but I do recall the early pre-1943 battles having a lot of enlisted air.

Interesting. I never knew about Navy enlisted pilots. I knew about the Army Air Corps enlisted pilots. Thanks for posting it. I love learning new stuff.

Yeah, one of the others who'd answered me, he's Navy, mentioned that Pres Bush, the first, was a NAP, as he'd phrased it, I thought he'd been commissioned, though young, due to social prominence, I'll try to check, enjoy....
