The deluxe edition of "The Great Escape" contains two DVD's, one of which is all of the behind the scenes stuff. The characters are a mix of real people with the exception of Steve McQueen. His character is completely made up. He was the Tom Cruise of his day and they wanted him for the film. Why? Who knows.

I realize, watch the the other Great Escape film with Christopher Reeves, he played Maj Johnny Dodge, a relative of sorts of Churchill, its very loosely, the story of how the Brits and the movie says aamericams, though I'm not sure if that's right, went after the Gestapo and/or SS who did what was done to the 50 escapees !mentioned in the movie, in the ending scene with Richard Attenborough, you might not have known that Donald Pleasance who played the forger also helped with the film, he was a WW2 hero who'd really been shot down, amdmreappy was a POW, if you look both the other film up and about him, you'll see everything, I've just been dying to see the book here made into a movie, you know? The story is true, basically, but the sensibilities of the period never let the true story contained in te book here he told, get the book ,trust me, you'll understand what I'm saying, OK?

You are correct: Americans "helped" build the tunnel and the Germans realized this so they moved the Americans to a camp where the other inmates were Polish or Russian and would not be able to work together. They also moved Polish and other non-English speakers into the camp with the British. And yes, you are doubly correct that the British hunted down all of the Gestapo and SS and executed them all after the war's end.

Its the real story, some of the anecdotes are positively hysterical, you'll perceive the difference from the film, promise....
