I think they should restart it. It is the deadliest bird in the sky. There is nothing that comes close to it. Russia is trying. Part of the reason, I believe, that production was stopped is because there was no real threat that the current roster couldn't manage - F15s & F16s.

Unfortunately our security is connected to politics. Where are the production plants located? How many jobs on the assembly line? That, instead of strategic planning, drives weapon systems

Lt Col Charlie Brown and that is why the production for the F-35 is so disjointed - every damned politician wanted some portion of the production to be in their districts.
