Our ever increasing reliance on contractors worries me. It seems all to similar to the path that the Roman Empire was heading down prior to it's fall. Economic troubles, too much military involvement in their expansion efforts, the overall weakening of the military and government corruption. We wouldn't need these contractors if we were able to keep our best and brightest. But it seems like too many engagements for too long are tearing us apart from the inside. Just my .02, hopefully I'm wrong.

Excellent analogy. Also, where does one think these civilian company pilots come from? Betting we are eating our young and they are paid handsomely for their experience.

It's interesting information for sure. Certainly not something I've ever considered.

In my humble opinion there are way too many civilians in the Air Force. I spent 5 years assigned to AFMC (Air Force Material Command). Which among the military folks is also known as Another F**king Million Civilians. The base I was assigned to was 75% civilians. Nearly all doing the same jobs at higher pay than the military pays, they work less hours and have all weekends, holidays off, etc. It seemed like a very inefficient and costly system.

Some of these guys were great, but those were the former military folks. However, the majority were never in the military, didn’t understand the system, and constantly complained about our culture. They even managed to shut down the DFAC for a few years because they didn’t use it. Totally screwed the military folks in base, especially the junior enlisted.

Can't argue one bit on that. Civilians are necessary but one of the highlights of my career was getting a civilian GS 12 fired.
