Knowing your target is unarmed emboldens a would be thief/attacker/rapist. Not knowing might cause some trepidation. Knowing your target is armed will likely eliminate all but the methed out or psychotic.

TSgt David LaPointe, there was a study in 19i2/83 funded by the U.S. Justice Dept. by 2 researchers from the Boston area. They interviewed incarcerated criminals in 10 states. 81% said they would always try to determine if their victims were armed. One statistic was very interesting, 57% feared an armed citizen more than a police officer.
One side note, both researchers were anti-gun prior to their study.

Maj Robert Thornton - That is simple self preservation. An armed police officer is going to make every attempt to arrest a suspect for prosecution. An armed citizen is going to stop the threat against themselves or their family, with deadly force if necessary. That 57% is the more intelligent percentage. Additionally, even highly trained officers have a tendency to miss vital areas, resulting in more shots being fired. A citizen who is not highly trained, is likely to fire even more rounds under the stress of a life and death confrontation, making the likelihood of the perpetrator taking more rounds in less vital areas more likely. Finally unless the cop happens to be passing by when an event occurs, there is going to be a response time. An armed citizen's response time is the time it takes to get their weapon on target when accosted. It is all simple numbers.

Maj Robert Thornton - I haven't seen or heard about that study. We know deterrence works, so it isn't surprising. Thanks.

I do like this information, especially since there is a large growing population of my peers who're vehemently anti-gun. I can't wrap my head around the idea that we can legally send an 18 year old to war but we're discussing denying them the legal right to carry and bear arms in the civilian community?

The only problem is those that go armed, just to be armed(show-offs) They don't go to the range, they don't train and when they try to draw it looks like Barney Fife on an episode of Andy Griffith. Pretty easy to spot usually, younger and have a hog-leg in a western style gun belt and holster strapped to their leg, walking around in the grocery store. If you see "that" guy get away from him, he'll draw fire and I don't want to be any where near.
