Thanks TSgt Joe C. for reminding us that on May 3, 1940 President Franklin D. Roosevelt was expecting 100 women when approximately 4,000 women showed up to attend a women’s division meeting of the Democratic National Committee to Washington D.C. He and his wife Eleanor had plans to host the event at the White House, however, had to be modified at the last minute, as they had originally expected only 100 guests. In any event he welcomed those attending the meeting.

This event was held in support of FDR's then unprecedented third run for President. That the Democratic group was a women's group showed the power women held as a voting block.
