I got my first rifle, a single shot .22, when I was 12. It stayed in my room and I could take it out whenever I wanted. I also knew that if I abused this the rifle would be taken away and while never stated, I am sure I would have gotten my bottom beat. For a predominantly rural state to have to pass legislation for a kid to handle a firearm seems ridiculous to me.

I guess I just don't get it. A gun is a tool, the government could take away 100% of the guns and there would still be murder and armed assault, the tools would be different but the result would be the same.

SGT Gregory Lawritson - I bought my son a shotgun when he was 13, as a reward for making Eagle scout. Although he grew up in a much more urban area than I did, he has never had a problem exercising proper control of a weapon...

It's evident to me that sidearms, with their short barrel, natural pointing nature, are more dangerous in the hands of children than "long guns". The requirement of close supervision of children when they are firing makes more sense than a total prohibition.
