In a demonstration staged by the student-run National Coordinating Committee to End the War in Vietnam, the first public burning of a draft card in the United States takes place.
These demonstrations drew 100,000 people in 40 cities across the country. In New York, David Miller, a young Catholic pacifist, became the first U.S. war protestor to burn his draft card in direct violation of a recently passed law forbidding such acts. Agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation later arrested him; he was tried, found guilty, and sentenced to two years imprisonment.

Thanks for reminding us that pacifists decided to burn their draft cards on October 15, 1965 SP5 Mark Kuzinski. What is striking to modern eyes is that these protestors wore suits while they burned draft cards and protested. This was before the later 1960s when the counter-culture adopted clothing to match their viewpoints.
I turned in my draft card when I enlisted in 1974.

LTC Stephen F. I remember I had to register for the draft when I ETSd. That struck me as strange.

SP5 Mark Kuzinski, for some reason, I never kept my first draft card. Perhaps it's because I received more than one, with different classifications. However, I do still have my original Selective Service registration card that I received when I registered shortly after my 18th birthday.

Good share. Had no idea tgere was so much civil unrest. Seems like every generation thinks theyre living in a time with the most craziness.... its good to look back in history and see that we've weatgered plenty of storms as a nation.
