Something doesn't add up. The basic school is six months long. IOC is 3 months long.
Captain Hierl must have received her commission sometime around January 2017 to get through IOC in September 2017. She makes Captain in less than 3 years and hits the end of her active duty obligation.
If I had to guess it is nothing hinky with her and everything to do with crappy fact checking by Marine Corps Times. But it sure is distracting.

Looking up a story about when she graduated IOC it had her graduating as a 1LT. That implies she was already a 1LT while she was in IOC and not a 2LT. So it could be possible she had already been a Marine officer for a bit of time before going to IOC and graduating in 2017. We're both doing a lot of speculation for a story that is merely about how the USMC is struggling to find women that want to go Infantry and the Commandant wants to change that.

Y'all are missing the obvious: The news used the exact same photo for this story as they used for the story announcing her graduation back in 2017. :p

All jokes aside, "Seek qualified active duty female company-grade volunteers for the opportunity to attend Infantry Officers Course and assignment to infantry battalions upon completion. To also include additional lateral moves for female Marines seeking careers in previously restricted MOS.". More than likely she was 1/4 or 1/2 way to capt before ever attending IOC. :)
