Thanks for reminding us TSgt Joe C. that US. Navy Captain Bruce McCandless became the first human being to fly untethered in space when he exited the U.S. space shuttle Challenger on February 7, 1984 and maneuvered freely, using a bulky white rocket pack of his own design.
I was interested that the date was given since the space shuttle Challenger flew at speeds greater than 17,500 miles per hour. I expect they kept track of where they were but may have used Cape Canaveral times as their baseline for recording events.
