This is not a surprise. Russia has coveted warm water ports in Persian Gulf forever. Heck it was part of reason CENTCOM was established. Breaking up Middle East coalition only makes it easier for Russia to achieve that goal.

Yes and given CENTCOMs first major plan was countering a Soviet invasion through Iran to gain warm water ports there is absolutely no reason to think Russia doesn't still want them. If they can hack a presidency they can certainly use that "tool box" to get what has been a goal for over a hundred years.
