I know you posted this with the best intentions Kim Bolen RN CCM ACM The author of the cited article is not a student of history.
The language of warfare including trenches, hookers, red necks [communists in China and people in this nation]; battle cries [used by HS sports teams everywhere]; straight as an arrow; bloody Mary; etc. are part of our heritage.
Military doctors, VA doctors and emergency-room doctors need to be comfortable using the language of modern wars with their patients. Other can benefit from understanding the fact that many have been traumatized in warfare and in the streets of this nation.
My paternal grandfather fought as a Lance Corporal in the British Army during WWI from Gallipoli, Turkey through the Trench warfare in France and Belgium. So as the saying goes, I have a dog in this hunt.
Lets debunk some of the myths he foisted upon naïve readers.
1. During WWI "more than 200 generals were killed, wounded or captured. Most visited the front lines every day. In battle they were considerably closer to the action than generals are today."
2. "Fifty years before WW1 broke out, southern China was torn apart by an even bloodier conflict. Conservative estimates of the dead in the 14-year Taiping rebellion start at between 20 million and 30 million. Around 17 million soldiers and civilians were killed during WW1."
3. "Front-line trenches could be a terribly hostile place to live. Units, often wet, cold and exposed to the enemy, would quickly lose their morale if they spent too much time in the trenches.
As a result, the British army rotated men in and out continuously. Between battles, a unit spent perhaps 10 days a month in the trench system and, of those, rarely more than three days right up on the front line. It was not unusual to be out of the line for a month."

Thank you for your insight Stephen. I am not a student of history either, just of life and trying to do the best I can with what I have. Yes, sir always with good intentions, that is one of my short comings.

Interesting article, Kim Bolen RN CCM ACM. Ironic that the article makes reference only to WWI, yet the photo used appears to be soldiers from the 1st ID during the Vietnam War.

Not shooting the messenger, Kim Bolen RN CCM ACM! Not my style. I should have been more explicit. What I should have said is that it seems extraordinary that a periodical as respected Forbes could not or would not go to the trouble to find a stock photo from WWI!
