Yes local pronunciations tend to trump common understand. When I was stationed in Columbus Georgia, I learned that Jordan was pronounced Jerdan, Buena Vista was pronounced Buana Vista, etc.

Sherbet “sher-biht.” is how I pronounce that wonderful desert. Sorbet is common in this area of northern Virginia.
As somebody who was taught German and was stationed there I learned pronunciation of German food such as Weiner [Vienna]
