I remember looking at this and a Minidisc (MD) player at a Circuit City in 1993 when I was on boot leave, and I thought they were both cool. I ended up going with the Minidisc because I could get a portable player that would fit in my sea bag, and the sales rep. kindly "threw in" a 5 pack of blank MD's.

Best Buy seems to be surviving for now, same as GameStop (for video games). Many love to do one stop shopping, or prefer to go to a large store that offers mutiple items as opposed to specialty stores. Maybe that's why Best Buy seems to do so well.
GameStop seems to still be making a lot of money from purchasing and selling pre-owned games, and it's working. I remember only paying about $29.99 for a new game but now they sell upwards of $59.99. GameStop offers the alternative to buy it used.
