I saw one once. I do remember back in 68 when GI showed us his night vision scope. We were on bunker duty, it was like 10pm and I looked into that scope it was weird. All I saw was light-green haze on everything. I could almost see through tree, or so it seemed. That was the first night vision I had ever seen or heard of.

I had the opportunity on several occasions in a former life to review and test several night vision sight systems. Just a little different than the Starlight, I can tell you, and definitely not 6 pounds!

Thank you for the great article, Wayne! When I worked nuclear security, I had one guy working for me who had been a sniper in 'Nam. He never said much about it, but since I was the lead firearms instructor for the force, we talked a lot about weapons in general. He came to me one day and said I had to see what his son had just given him. He showed me a picture of a Winchester Model 70 with an ART scope on it and said it was what he used in-country. It wasn't the exact one, but the serial numbers were correct for the era. (Yeah, like a good Marine he still remembered both of them.) I do not remember if it had a Starlight or not. I never saw a man as proud of a son or a gift as he was right then.

The AN/PVS-2 would have been a bitch to get... the mounting hardware alone was a miserable b*tch... but yeah, that's a helluva gift...

Sgt Wayne Wood - He told me what his son paid for it, but I don't remember how much it was. I do know they had seen it together somewhere (magazine ad maybe) and Joe said something to his son about having and using one. That's why he knew how much it was. Wasn't cheap as I remember.
