Why do they bring up his military service which has nothing to do with the crime. It's like being in the military causes you to become a criminal.

I wondered the same thing. What if he had never served? Would they headline it with "Catholic or Baptist Man...?" Or "White or Black or Oriental Man...?"
It makes no sense but for the sake of throwing out something that would capture someones attention - For dramatics sake, I guess.

It really annoys me when a former service member is called out. Three and a half years in the military out of his 60 years? Why not a note as to his High School or Elementary School? He was there longer.
