It's a win/win for the State. Positive PR for compassion, and cost savings. Those last weeks can rack up bills. They have to provide to avoid "cruel and unusual punishment". Better to let someone outside pay for care. Just my guess though.

CWO3 (Join to see) the flaw in your plan is that the taxpayer will still pay for it, only out of the more expensive medicaide plan. It would be less expensive in the walls of the prison as room and board are already figured in and they cannot upcharge for basic supplies, equipment, and drugs.

MSgt Stephen Council - I should have said win/win for the prison - PR and somebody else pays the bill. Many prisons are profit centers now and corrections now entails many publicly traded stocks. Either way - public or private - the inmate dying of cancer or similar is far above "room & board" and basic supplies. If they aren't given a reasonable level of care, their attorney will have a field day, and may even file a tort for their cut of any settlement.
