I remember when I was going up for my promotion board for SSG and the guy in front of me got kicked out of the board for telling the CSM that his short term goal was to get out of the Army and join the Air Force... When I reported the CSM for my board, my CSM looked at me and said, "SGT Moore, if you tell me that you're going to get out of my beloved Army and join the Air Force, I'm going to climb over this table and choke slam you.." I wouldn't have even thought of saying that to a CSM, I have a little more common sense... Not much more but some ;) No offense to my Air Force brothers and sisters..

The guy in front of me forgot the NCO creed and missed half the questions after being 10 minutes late. So the rest of us had a private meeting after the board and all the SGMs in and the CSM the HQ BN 8th Army. Was so much fun and no pressure. I did great on the board myself but they wanted to test us after the board due to that one SGT.

I don't know why he'd get kicked out of the board, clearly he demonstrated unprecedented bravery in the face of extreme adversity. What a model of fearless leadership, promote ahead of peers.

When I was a PFC, I went to our Brigade Mechanic of the Quarter Board. It was a formal board in the morning, chaired by the Brigade CSM, S-3 SGM, the two 1SGs of the maintenance companies in the Brigade and the two MSGs working in each Battalion shop office. I didn't know any better at the time, but I impressed no one on the board when I said my long term goal was to become a Warrant Officer. I did well on the board after that, and destroyed the troubleshooting practical exam in the afternoon, but I think telling a room filled with senior NCOs that I didn't want to be one of them ruined my chance at winning. Oh well.

Sir, I remember when my first line supervisor took me to my first board. He asked me my long term goal and I told him that I wanted to be a commissioned officer (just like my father ).

He told me to never say that around senior NCOs because some of them might hear that and think "oh this guy wants to be MY boss one day...f*** him."

Had the same thing happen to me Chief! Was going for my SPC to SGT board and told them that my long term goal was to be a warrant officer. They passed me but as they were shaking my hand, they all told me never to say that again.

How long were you in there for 10-15minutes? You did really good if he hit all the questions.
