Thanks TSgt Joe C. for letting us know that on January 30, 1948 Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, the world’s chief advocate of non-violence, was assassinated in New Delhi by a terrorist sponsored by a right-wing Hindu militia group.
"Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was murdered on January 30, 1948 in Delhi. He was shot at point-blank range by Nathuram Godse. Father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi was outside on the steps of the building where a prayer meeting was going to take place. He was surrounded by a part of his family and some followers when three gunshots killed him. Prior to his death, there had been five unsuccessful attempts to kill Gandhi, the first occurring in 1934.
On 30 January 1948, Godse killed Gandhi. He approached Gandhi on the way to a prayer meeting and bowed. A girl accompanying Gandhi told Godse, "Brother, Bapu is already late" and tried to put him off, but Godse pushed her aside and shot Gandhi three times at point-blank range in the chest with a Beretta M1934 semi-automatic pistol chambered in .380 ACP bearing the serial number 606824.
Godse shot Mahatma Gandhi thrice, but despite this Gandhi was not rushed to the nearby hospital. Strangely, he was taken back to Birla House, and the nation is yet to get a satisfactory reply on this mysterious development."

Also, contrary to popular myth/belief, the British did not order his death. Chandra Bose - yes - Ghandi, no.

Nope. The British had already decided to leave India. That plan was made in 1930. The only sticking point was how much to plunder and how much to leave. The civil war and unrest was set up to keep the Indians busy while the British left.
