Here's my respectful counterpoint Sandy-Concealed Carry shouldn't come with "restrictions" once someone has passed the associated background checks, classroom and range instruction, and been duly issued a permit by the state government.

I'm not a "fan" of the idea of intentionally "arming teachers"; anyone who has even a minute level of tactical training understands the risks associated. However, I am in support of allowing people to exercise their rights and earned privileges free of arbitrary limits. To get my CC permit took three months and several hundred dollars...and I had a valid SF-86 at the time, and live in a "gun friendly" state.

This educator pulled a political stunt...plain and simple. They didn't do this because they are suffering from emotional or mental instability, but rather, because they were willing to face consequences to further their cause.

As regards "depressed, manic or mixed states"; I can assure you that there were countless times while on active duty I could've been "diagnosed" with any or all of the above while in theater, loaded up with not one, but two weapons, plenty of ammo and body armor. If I had a psychiatrist examine me at the end of each and every day now, I'm sure they'd prescribe something at least four out of five working days.

There are certainly people with real mental and emotional health issues, and if they are being concurrently treated for it...I think that should be closely examined before issuing a CCP. However, we shouldn't limit freedoms and personal safety unilaterally just because someone "may" be a ticking time bomb.

Yes, and "to a high degree". They continued a tradition reaching back to the Gabby Giffords shooter, Columbine, Virginia Tech, the "batman movie", even to Charles Whitman, and the "Texas Tower".
Whitman told his psychiatrist about his compulsion to shoot people from the tower, but that Freudian dismissed it, because the tower was "a common phallic symbol".
Somebody should have told the Doc "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar".

20 years ago, when I first went on record advocating armed teachers, I said "Arm the teachers." Eventually I realized saying it that way had an unintended connotation, and ever since then I say "Allow teachers to be armed." Take away the idea entirely of putting a gun into the hands of someone who has no desire to have anything to do with it. This is strictly for volunteers who are competent gun handlers who are willing to get screened and trained.

SSgt Christopher Brose - You can be sure that if there is the slightest lack of clarity in the statements you post, there will be a host of “strawman” interpretations offered by those who intentionally choose to respond to what they wish you said, in place of what actually was said.
Sometimes, even the most precise statement of your views will still result in some mindless objection from some mindless fool about what he wanted you to say, because he had an answer for that, but no answer for what you actually said.
I have seen proposals for armed teachers falsely interpreted as “You want kindergartners to have pistols in their backpacks!! You're out of your mind!!”
You can be sure that when you see that sort of “strawman” it's a safe bet that all they can do is offer a distraction in place of a reply.

CW3 Harvey K. - Agreed. It can actually be an amusing phenomenon to observe. I think the people who do that often don't know they're doing it -- in their minds, what they're saying is connected. It's the sad byproduct of people who have never learned how to think critically.

The principal was surprised? Why? This teacher had already been involved in two incidents that should have resulted in his no longer being trusted with a classroom filled with students:

http://time.com/5179477/dalton-high-school-shooting/

"And just over a year ago, school employees and a police officer began searching Dalton High School after Davidson went missing. He was finally found sitting on the curb along a street a few blocks from the campus, being propped up by two school staff members, police said. “I attempted to speak with Davidson as did staff members but no amount of stimulus would draw a response,” an officer wrote in his report. Davidson was then taken to a hospital.

In 2016, Davidson walked into the lobby of the Dalton police headquarters and told a wild story including his suspicions that someone had been murdered, police said. Detectives couldn’t verify that any of it was true, and he was taken to the hospital since he’d expressed thoughts of hurting himself, police wrote in their report on that episode."

1LT Sandy Annala - No where close to being an expert on civilian or military weapons; and would not make such a claim. As far as 'registration' goes, that depends on a considerable number of factors, but I believe that you are thinking along the lines of NICS and other like databases to include ones such as the "no fly list." In that case, I am not an expert either, but the knowledge about them come from practical experience in software programming and testing, genealogy research, and long years of experience with GIGO (Garbage In, Garbage Out). And as far as why full auto weapons and why they may be unfit for routine civilian purposes, that falls into the same reasons as why full auto is unfit for routine military purposes, plus one addition - damaging a carcass to the point that it (the carcass) is not fit for human consumption. There is one caveat with this one - suppressive fire could be considered routine military use, but it can also be accomplished with either a semiauto or bolt action weapon as well.

SGT Gregory Lawritson - I really didn't intend to wind you up - but your story is a joy to hear - and your experiences sound delightful. I see no reason not to enjoy the fire of full auto weapons in the desert - away from big city problems and twitchy school teachers. There is no good reason for any kind of politician to take that away from you - assuming the proper paperwork, background investigation, and tax stamps. Warmest Regards, Sandy :)

SGT Gregory Lawritson - I understand - but why not a Walther 9mm or for that matter a shotgun - for home defense? An AR-15 may be effective - but you actually have to aim at a human target (difficult for some folks) - the shotgun only needs to be pointed in the approximate direction of the noise or varmint. Warmest Regards, Sandy :)

The thought that there are many throughout our society is not a newsflash. I’m sure many educators would be irate at your insinuation. We have a serious issue in this area, and it’s not just more gun control, but limits placed on medical records confidentiality.
