I had a chance to tour a Los Angeles Class Attack Submarine when I was on the Faculty of DSMC. Sorry - I would rather be in an M1A2 in the Desert or the North German Plain then in a Sub.

What goes up must come down (ask a paratrooper) but what goes down needn't come back up...

My grandfather was on WWI German U-boats. Dangerous business. I want surprised when he told me that they spent most of their time on the surface unless actively engaged in hitting targets.

Yes. Correct. In fact, most attacks were preferred to be at surface/at night as your escape speed was greater. Nuclear power now allows us to attack submerged at a higher speed. But back in diesel days, it was touchy.

Those were some unsafe boats. The crews of those things were extremely brave.

We were told in sub school that a submarine is more danger to its crew than the enemy.
