Thanks for reminding us TSgt Joe C. that in 1917, German troops began a well-planned withdrawal which had been ordered several weeks previously by Kaiser Wilhelm. The withdrawal to strong positions on the Hindenburg Line, solidified their defenses as they dug in for a continued struggle on the Western Front in World War I.
My paternal grandfather fought as a British lance corporal during this time along with his brother.

Here's the account of the 32nd infantry breaking through. The section they attacked was called the Kriemhilde. The 32nd was the first to breach the line.
