This battle illustrates the way the whole war was conducted. Attempting to defend everywhere, both armies would mass troops to force an advance against a fortified enemy, sustain grievous casualties as a result, and never have enough in reserve to maneuver and exploit any gains made. The result was repeated slaughters to no discernible advantage.
