WASP Gertrude Tompkins Silver Memorial
Betty Wheaton interviews WWII Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) and covers the WASP Gertrude Tompkins Silver Memorial. Produced by Jarel & Betty Wheaton ...
Thank you my friend SSG Jeffrey Leake for honoring Women Airforce Service Pilot Gertrude Vreeland Tompkins Silver
The Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) was a civilian women pilots' organization of trained volunteers who tested and ferried combat aircraft to bases to fee up the combat pilots who were men and were in great demand because of combat deaths, etc.
Additionally they had a role in training other pilots and ferried combat aircraft.
Rest in peace Gertrude Vreeland Tompkins Silver whose resting place is known only to God it seems.
Gertrude was scheduled to fly a P-51 Mustang fighter plane from Mines Field in Inglewood, California (now the Los Angeles International Airport, or "LA X") to Palm Springs, California on October 26, 1944. A photo of a similar aircraft is posted with this case summary. She planned to fly the plane to New Jersey during the following days, but WASPs were required to make stopovers at night to avoid flying during those hours.
