'Ghost fleet' graveyard reborn as nature sanctuary - CNN.com

Mallows Bay, Maryland is the location of numerous shipwrecks dating from the American Civil War. Many of the ships were abandoned, stripped and scuttled. Over the years nature has reclaimed these ships, with osprey making their nests, herons their rookeries and bats claiming the hulls. Numerous flora and fauna have sprouted on the ships making them a haven for wildlife. Submerged ships have become a haven for fish and crustaceans. @

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is considering giving Mallows Bay sanctuary status, designating it a national marine sanctuary. If this happens Mallows Bay will become a part of existing ecological havens. PO1 John Miller SN Greg Wright
