Never had a GI Joe. Never did like playing with dolls. Besides that, in 1964, I was graduating from High School. In 1965, I became a GI Joe, or a GI Bo.
For those who grew up playing with G.I. Joes, one thing was immediately clear: Our action figures were a hell of a lot more badass than Barbie’s kerchief-wearing counterpart, Ken.
That’s no accident.
In 1964, the toy company Hasbro made waves at the New York Toy Fair when its president, Merrill Hassenfeld, announced the launch of a new toy for boys.

Someone had to protect Barbie, Ken was to much of a pretty boy to want to have his hair messed up.

One of my favorite things about dolls/action figures is the poke at New Wave Feminism and their attacks on Barbie as being an "unrealistic" image for girls. And yeah, I grew up with Gi Joe and He-man, Captain Power, and a slew of other toys. I also had a computer in the house at 8 years old and grew up flying missions in the Pacific (Battlehawks 1942), fighting crime (Police Quest), and busting ghosts. Imagination drives so much of childhood.
