In a lot of companies with policies like this there is usually a "hey, you messed up, we got a report, you have to show us for the next 3 months you changed your ways". Then, if another infraction, a full on Personal Improvement Program (3-6 months) before being fired. So, either there has been a fairly long HR documented problem between this engineer and Google or they had a knee jerk firing. Will be interested in the results of any lawsuits that come out of this...

I agree - I've read the internal memo written and find it really hard to see how violates Google's policies. If there are no earlier infractions, I see Google having a hard time in court explaining what part is in violation (though I'd expect Google to settle first, no way do they want an open court hearing w/ a jury).

What happens to civilisations that punish smart people (in this case the Google employee) for speaking the truth (i.e. the employees memo), in order to intimidate others into silence?
