I've always wanted to see photo's at a distance, wonder how much it actually worked to break up the silhouette on the horizon.

Sir, I suspect stills wouldn't capture the effect well as this was intended for an observer and target which were both moving.

MAJ (Join to see) - Not a squid. So dunno. However, it may beg a question of use on smaller vessels in littoral waters against an asymmetric threat.

Stripes were used to make it hard to identify individual ships by submarines in the pre-electronics age. USCG visibly and electronically disguise cutters to fool drug smugglers and the Navy. We like to confuse the Navy. .
