When I was going to grad school, we had a Marine Officer that was in our class. The Navy paid for our degrees, but the Marine had to pay for his out of his own pocket. With a family, things were definitely tight. Two things I would add.. One, sometimes the school itself has some extra money. I remember the registrar was able to find an unused grant that he was able to use to finish. Second, this was years ago before the advent of all the bookseller sites, but we would pick up all the books at the end of the semester that students would throw away. We gathered them for him so he could resell them to the book store. Sometimes, they would only give him store credit for his books, but it was easily $1000 a semester for just grabbing stuff that others had thrown away. Now it is even easier with all the bookselling sites/Amazon that there are out there now... Hope this helps!
