It was very important to establish that rank in order to give Grant Seniority. With officer ranks topped out at Major General (2 Stars) it was often a delicate matter to decide who held the higher billet, as Divisions, Corps and the Entire Army could be commanded by men of the same rank. Seniority by date of rank was often a very sticky point and several officers were indignant over being passed over by men who by DOR were junior to them.
