I don't think this is quite the same thing but I enjoyed significant success as an independent consultant by teaching programming. Often companies who sent their employees for training would ask how long it would take their employees to master sufficient skills to produce useful applications. When I told them, they would then hire me to write the programs they needed. Later, with a healthy list of clients in hand, I returned to architect applications that their employees coded. In effect, I was mentoring them...
