I've been reading War and Remembrance by Herman Wouk and he does an excellent job of explaining the significance of the pivotal battles in the Pacific (well, in the other theaters of war as well). Like really good historical fiction, Wouk uses fictional characters to provide readers with insights into real events that are often lost in academic historical tomes. BTW, you should read Winds of War first...

The author of "... From Here to Eternity..." fought on Guadalcanal with my friends Dad. They were both in Hawaii stationed at Schofield Baracks on 7 December 1941. That author is James Jones and his experiences on the "Canal" are immortalized in his novel "...the "...Thin Red Line..."

SSgt GG-15 RET Jim Lint great article on why this battle was crucial. Brutal combat, but integral to the victory in the Pacific! Its hard to picture island hopping like they did in the 40s, but with each island that we took from the Japanese, the more they had to realize the sun was setting on their dreams of Empire.
