Tech companies have abused the H1B system for years saying there are not enough American workers while hiring cheapers Indian and other foreign born visa holders for much cheaper wages.
This is part of a shell game all companies play each year, they say they post the positions, not enough Americans apply, pull in 'trainees' from oversees on basic wages and hold the H1B visa over their head until the time period runs.
The truth is you are OK in tech until late 40s/early 50s and your salary gets too high, the tech companies kick you out of the system and hire new employees and you apply, apply, apply, struggling to get hired until you drop your price or accept a lateral.

Agree with you entirely. Last paragraph is true but the way out is to learn packaged software. It is true with Java which concerns me because now I am moving out of Packaged Software and into Java. However, switched employers and am with an employer now that will likely keep me until retirement unless I really screw up. Package software saved me otherwise I would have been laid off............never to be hired again due to age. The problem with the Indian and Pakistani H1b's is most are one hit wonders in that they only know one package and refuse to broaden their skills beyond it. Plus they all expect to be promoted and given a raise once a year........completely missing the point why the employer hired them in the first place over American Citizens (which can be humorous to watch during annual compensation review). Your right otherwise and it was a National Disgrace how the H1b program was abused under Clinton, Bush and Obama.......I still suspect all three got financial kickbacks for approving the high numbers they did. If I did not go the packaged software route and/or did not know how to invest via my Finance degree. My chances at retirement would be nill and I would have nothing saved like others in my peer group. Ran into a lot of people that have no savings for retirement in IT.......so I am very fortunate compared to how others were openly screwed by the politicians here. Trump is 100% right on his views on immigration policies. I am absolutely shocked the Democrats do not even see this going on, completely blind to it.

I work with several people with/had H1B visas. Some have become citizens and some are in a holding pattern, because of immigration policy. To get fast tracked for citizenship they are required to get a master's degree, which is still a 10 year wait. Most don't like the open border/amnesty policy the democrats/RINOs push and when they become citizens, they'll be voting against those people.
The Indians, I work with, didn't like the institutionalized corruption in their home country and they don't like seeing it grow and fester here. Some don't understand why Americans aren't holding their politicians to the same standard. They see a growing "cast" system. I agree.
Considering I'm still an anomaly where I work... a self taught developer, working with college educated people, both native and foreign born... companies will hire, but the individual has to put forth an effort to learn the needed skills.
And for the millennials who are asking for 6 figure salaries right out of college, they need a degree of humility and they need to start at the bottom like everyone else. Prove yourselves and earn that income.
