If you haven't seen the Broadway musical Hamilton, shell out $6.99 for one month of Disney+. You don't want to miss this. Last year my VFW Post awarded it Elementary School Teacher of the Year award to one who had his students put on the show. I only saw a small piece and was curious about it. Just what was it teaching about American history? Well, it turns out to be the truth. Our Founders were humans, not the nickel-plated angels that we were presented in school. Therein lies the problem. When you present heroes as superhuman, you excuse ordinary mortals like you and I from attempting to emulate them. And they can be attacked for their flaws and foibles (as we are seeing today). Actually, Hamilton is the second musical I have recommended for teaching American history. There's also 1776.
BTW, I have shared the King's three songs from Hamilton because they are, quite simply, my favorite part of the show. This actor/singer was blessed with the best lines (and humor) in the show. And he played it with all the finesse of Michael Keaton in Beetlejuice.
