You have to also put into perspective that the rise of ISIS also played a role, both sides of the Syrian conflict had another enemy to combat. But it did not hurt Assad's side that Russian indiscriminately bombed hospitals, civilians and any other target as well as military targets.

In the sense of supporting it's allies, maintaining a clear political position with little desire on being everyone's friends, and turning around a hopeless military position, long story short, yes, yes they have won that "war." Russia is doing a pretty fantastic job at establishing itself in the middle east... it's almost like they are learning from our mistakes....
