COL Mikel J. Burroughs Depression comes from many causes. I have a 70% rating from the VA for depression due to my service related injuries, that have left me unable to work.
Anything that takes away from ones' sense of self will cause depression. This includes grief from all causes (death, injury, loss of job, retiring, downsizing ones' home, etc...)
Of course PTSD and TBI include depression as a symptom. The VA lumps all behavioral issues into a single disability rating. So a veteran with PTSD, TBI, Depression, Anxiety, and other related issues, will get a single rating, based on the severity of symptoms, including whether the veteran is suicidal, and if so, to what extent. This often causes consternation when vets file claims, so it's always good to ensure they know how claims are rated. This was something I always explained as a service officer.
I'm looking forward to working with vets through SAVL...

Nope, I have not seen this article...thanks for sharing. I have a client who's going through this sort of thing....PTSD...from being in combat zone...I'm going to forward this to his wife...maybe he'd be good for the study.
