My dad's uncle Maurice was a waist gunner on a B-17 and my dad and his other cousins would gather round him at family reunions and ask him about the war and how many enemy planes he shot down. He would always say "Big Sky, little bullet" even when talking about the .50 gun he fired in the waist gunners position on the B-17. So part of me wants to say yes a lucky shot indeed but a shot made for the morale of the bomber crews across the East Asian countries and later on in the other combat theaters of the war around the world.
