In The Prince, Machiavelli says leaders should appear religious but not be religious, a pragmatic position that Putin seems to have adopted. Outwardly he is very supportive of the Russian Orthodox Church, even has an ikon in his conference room...but how sincere is he? Is he using the church? Perhaps, but it's better than the persecution of Christians and Jews that went on during the Soviet rule.
