Yes, it is heartbreaking. The officer will undoubtedly leave police work. I've seen it happen before. This tragedy is made possible by many factors, almost all of which are totally void of intent or malice. It simply happens in the über chaotic, split seconds in which shots are fired. It's easy to say police need to take more time and be more patient, but facing an unknown man with a gun pointed at you is a very bad time to start that practice. Police are not paid to be shot first to satisfy any public idea of a pre-shooting waiting period. This was terrible. But it will happen again and again. It is guaranteed in a country full of guns, owned by civilians who have little to no concept of proper procedures to follow when using, much less displaying a firearm, even one used in self defense, in the presence of armed police officers. It is a recipe for tragedy.
