Great story! I would still like to get a service dog and try and get off of someof my meds. I should bring that up at my next appointment.

At the Portland Oregon VA I picked up some brochures, there is a study for pairing up Vets with Service animals. Terms and conditions apply. You have to take classes and attend meetings and do evals. But its a funded study. I dont THINK you get to keep the dog, and you cant have any other pets at the time. Maybe you should check and see if something similar is on your area? I put up brochures at a place where I know other vets visit, But I also showed one to my wife. She knows I am in puppy withdrawal as we lost both of our dogs last year. We agreed to wait a bit before getting more and she was amused/annoyed at my tactics to get around this. I sometimes volunteer to take care of other peoples pets just to get my animal fix.
Have you considered other options such as volunteering somewhere? Where we live theres a ton of people with Horses and my wife wanted to get another Horse but why? We can go spend time with others horses and many people (If you are competent) are happy to let you help care for theirs, exercise them brush them etc. (Its cheaper, Horses are UBER expensive) but perhaps that might be a good solution.
I used to be a rep-volunteer-contact with NW Great Dane Rescue and Doberman Rescue and friends with some Mastiff and Rottweiler rescue people. My wife made me stop because i simply CANNOT say NO!
If you want FUN,,, see if you can find a Dog Romp meetup in your area. Theres a group of Great Dane owners locally and they have Dane Romps 2-3 times per month. Meet at a park and nothing more fun and therapeutic than 7-15 Great Danes running, playing and wrestling.
