The biggest piece is changing the round, otherwise this is all just a mental exercise. What are the ranges and environment it will be used in? What do we want the soldier and the weapon system to do?

Trying to get anyone to agree on what the next/best weapon should be will be a challenge. The article mentions the M27 which id being used by some Marine Corps Units as a possible replacement. The M27 is still firing the 5.56 and is an H&K platform (made in Germany). I would suggest going toward a larger round and would insist the weapon by made in the U.S. The M27 is listed at $3,000 per rifle today. A little pricey but could come down with a larger contract award.
